EXPRESSIVE ARTS

Expressive Arts

Sometimes words alone are not enough to fully understand, process, or communicate our experiences. Expressive Arts Therapy is an experiential approach that uses creative processes—including visual art, writing, music, storytelling, and other forms of expression—to support insight, healing, and personal growth.

At our practice, expressive arts are not typically used as a standalone treatment. Instead, we integrate creative and experiential techniques into evidence-based therapies such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, attachment-focused therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches. These methods can help bring deeper understanding to emotions, beliefs, and experiences that may be difficult to access through conversation alone.

Expressive arts is not about artistic skill or creating a finished product. No artistic experience is necessary. The focus is on the process of exploration, self-expression, and meaning-making. Creative activities can help clients connect with emotions, gain new perspectives, process difficult experiences, and access strengths that may not emerge through traditional talk therapy.

Within our attachment-informed framework, expressive arts can also help create corrective emotional experiences. Creative expression often allows clients to safely explore vulnerability, self-compassion, connection, and authenticity in ways that support the development of a more secure relationship with themselves and others.

Whether through drawing, journaling, movement, metaphor, or other creative exercises, expressive arts provide another pathway to healing—one that complements traditional therapeutic approaches and helps translate insight into meaningful, lasting change.
