DIALECTICAL-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based approach that helps individuals build skills for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, and navigating life's challenges more effectively. Originally developed to treat chronic emotional distress, DBT is now widely used to support people experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, mood disorders, self-destructive behaviors, and difficulties with emotional regulation.
DBT is based on the idea that two things can be true at the same time: you can accept yourself as you are while also working toward meaningful change. This balance of acceptance and growth is a central part of the therapeutic process.
DBT focuses on four key skill areas:
Mindfulness: Developing awareness of the present moment without judgment.
Distress Tolerance: Learning healthy ways to cope with difficult emotions and stressful situations.
Emotion Regulation: Understanding and managing emotions more effectively.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Building communication skills, setting boundaries, and improving relationships.
In therapy, you and your therapist will work together to identify challenges, strengthen coping skills, and develop practical strategies for responding to difficult situations. DBT emphasizes learning skills that can be applied in everyday life, helping you feel more confident, balanced, and capable of handling life's ups and downs.
DBT may be a good fit if you often feel overwhelmed by emotions, struggle with relationships, experience intense mood shifts, or want to develop healthier ways of coping with stress and adversity.
