EMOTIONALLY-FOCUSED INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT)

Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) is an evidence-based, attachment-centered approach that helps individuals better understand, process, and transform their emotional experiences. Developed from the principles of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), EFIT recognizes that emotions are not problems to be eliminated—they are important sources of information that guide our needs, relationships, and sense of self.

EFIT is grounded in attachment theory and explores how past and present relationship experiences shape the way we respond to emotions, connect with others, and view ourselves. When attachment needs for safety, connection, acceptance, or support have gone unmet, people may develop patterns of emotional protection that can lead to anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, self-criticism, or feelings of disconnection.

In therapy, you and your therapist work together to identify these patterns, access underlying emotions, and develop new ways of responding to emotional experiences. Rather than focusing solely on managing symptoms, EFIT helps clients create deeper emotional understanding and healing by addressing the needs and experiences that exist beneath the surface.

Through a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship, clients are able to experience emotions in new ways, strengthen self-compassion, and develop a more secure relationship with themselves and others. As emotional experiences are processed and reorganized, many people find greater confidence, resilience, and connection in their lives and relationships.

At our practice, EFIT aligns closely with our attachment-informed philosophy of care. We often integrate EFIT principles with other evidence-based approaches such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, and mindfulness-based interventions to support both emotional healing and lasting change.

EFIT may be a good fit if you feel stuck in recurring emotional patterns, struggle with self-worth or relationships, experience intense emotions, or want to better understand and transform the deeper experiences shaping your life.
