EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy designed to help individuals process and heal from distressing life experiences, traumatic events, and other memories that continue to affect their thoughts, emotions, and daily functioning.

When difficult experiences are not fully processed, they can become "stuck" in the brain and continue to trigger emotional distress long after the event has passed. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so they can be stored in a healthier, more adaptive way. As a result, memories often become less emotionally overwhelming, allowing individuals to move forward with greater resilience and confidence.

During EMDR therapy, your therapist will guide you through a structured process that involves recalling aspects of a distressing memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones. This process helps the brain integrate and make sense of past experiences without requiring you to discuss every detail of the event extensively.

EMDR is commonly used to treat trauma and PTSD, but it can also be effective for anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, grief, low self-esteem, and other concerns connected to difficult life experiences.

EMDR may be a good fit if you feel that past experiences continue to impact your present-day emotions, relationships, self-image, or ability to cope with stress. Many clients find that EMDR helps them reduce emotional distress, gain new perspectives, and experience lasting relief from symptoms that have felt difficult to overcome.
